Icon Painter. Nun Juliana (In Russian)
This beautifully illustrated book-album chronicles the life and work of Nun Juliana (Maria Nikolaevna Sokolova, 1899–1981), a revered iconographer of the Russian Orthodox Church. Living through a time of great upheaval, she remained steadfast in her sacred vocation, embodying the Orthodox understanding of iconography as a form of prayer and divine revelation. Structured chronologically, the book traces her spiritual and artistic journey, revealing how her work was shaped by faith, ascetic devotion, and the tradition of Holy Rus’. Included are her most significant works—icons, frescoes, and sketches—many of which were carefully restored and exhibited at the Blessed Work exhibition at the Andrei Rublev Museum in Moscow in 2010. More than a tribute, this volume offers a theological and historical reflection on the enduring role of iconography in the life of the Church and the spiritual legacy of one of the 20th century’s most remarkable iconographers.
