The Mariupol Deisis stands as an integral component within the Icons on Ammo Boxes Project, envisioned by Kyiv artists Sofia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko. The Mariupol Iconostasis is a prayerful meditation on the tragedy that unfolded in the spring of 2022 when Russian troops almost completely destroyed Mariupol, a small city in southeastern Ukraine. This city was founded by Greeks who relocated from Crimea in the 18th century and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is a terrible symbolism in the fact that the troops of a country that defines itself as a defender of traditional Christian values and even calls itself “Holy Russia,” without any shame destroyed a city bearing a name associated with the Mother of God.
In a compositional sense, the Mariupol iconostasis is organized as a deisis, one of the tiers of the traditional iconostasis in the Orthodox Church. The deisis is a visualization of the prayerful invocation of the saints – together the audience nearby – to Christ with our sorrows, petitions, hopes, and gratitude.
It is a prayer for peace, a mournful memory of the dead, gratitude for those who have returned alive… It is impossible to enumerate all the tears and all the pain that the war has brought, but the prayer reveals the central message – the Lord, who Himself suffered on the Cross, walks with those who suffer who have become victims of this war.
The Mariupol Deisis is a testimony to the fact that Ukraine continues not only to fight, to defend its people and its land but also to pray without losing the Gospel perspective, trusting God’s mercy and love.
