The Icons on Ammo Boxes project, created by Kyiv-based artists Sophia Atlantova and Olexandr Klymenko, transforms symbols of destruction into vessels of divine presence. Traditional Orthodox iconography demands perfection in materials and execution, insisting on flawless wooden boards and images themselves that represent the unblemished heavenly realm. In stark contrast, these artists deliberately paint sacred images on raw wood of ammunition crates from the war zone in Ukraine, creating a profound theological statement about finding God’s light amidst the tragedy of war. Their work powerfully testifies that divine presence persists not despite human suffering but within it, reimagining broken materials of conflict as bearers of holy images. Begun in 2014, the project has since been exhibited in numerous cities throughout Europe and America, bringing its powerful message of redemption and divine presence to audiences worldwide.
